My reason for First Love Boutique came about in 2018. My idea came about in 2019.
Let me first explain my reason. I have a 4-year-old niece who I sincerely adore. She’s my only brother’s first and only little girl and she has a very special place in my heart. I was visiting with my family in Pennsylvania (at the time I was living in Raleigh, NC—which will always have a special place in my heart—my second home) and I was hanging out with my niece. Per usual, my phone was in my hand ready to snap cute photos of my niece. Here it was, time to take a photo of something she was doing, but instead of snapping a photo of her, my phone went selfie mode on me. I didn’t have make-up on, my hair was in a messy ponytail and I was about to verbalize, “Ew, I look so ugly!” But, I didn’t this time. Not because I didn’t feel that way about myself at that moment, but because it was as if God clasped his loving hands against my mouth and reminded me to be kind to myself because K should not hear her aunt talking negatively of herself.
Kids are sponges, they will pick up on what others say and do and I didn’t want her thinking it was normal for her to talk badly of herself. My thoughts couldn’t wrap around that she had any REASON to talk badly of herself. She’s beautiful as she is, and God made her perfect. That contradictory thought made me think, “Then, why am I saying this about myself?”
That day in 2018 began my journey to end my verbally abusive self-talk and to help others with it as well.
My business idea came about during the Business Boutique conference I attended in Nashville, TN in October 2019. Christy Wright spoke about defining your why. I immediately thought of that day in 2018. I have always wanted to work in the fashion industry, but I couldn’t find a good fit for myself working for others in this industry. I knew whatever I did had to have meaning for me. Just then, I thought I could blend the two ideas together, building ladies confidence through helping them feel confident in what they are wearing, but also building ladies confidence from within by helping them learn better mind-set, a new way to think about themselves. It takes continual effort, but I know we can do this together!
